Brain Aneurysm Awareness Walk
All proceeds from the walk will go to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation to fund further research. Walk to Remember
In recognition of National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness month, which aims to increase the community’s understanding of the grief associated with the loss of an unborn or newborn child, Winthrop-University Hospital’s Perinatal Bereavement Team will host the Eighth Annual Walk to Remember at 9 a.m. at Field 5 of Eisenhower Park, East Meadow. This annual memorial event, the only walk of its kind on LI, enables parents, relatives and friends who have lost a child due to pregnancy complications, stillbirth, early infant loss or fetal abnormalities to walk in remembrance of their loved one. The day also includes a light breakfast, a candlelight memorial service and an opportunity for parents to share their memories with others as well as create a personal memory page for inclusion in Winthrop’s Memory Scrap Book. Any individuals who wish to create a personal memory page for inclusion in the Memory Scrap Book are asked to bring it with them the day of the walk. A donation of $15 per person is requested by Sept. 23; children under 12 years of age may participate for free. All proceeds benefit Winthrop’s Perinatal Bereavement Team, which is dedicated to providing education, comfort and support to help families cope with the loss of a child. Gold Star Families Remembrance
NC Executive Edward P. Mangano will join “Gold Star” mothers, fathers and families as they offer a “Remembrance of Our Fallen Heroes” program at the Veterans Memorial in Eisenhower Park from 3 to 5 p.m. The ceremony, which will be open to the general public, will honor the memory of U.S. Armed Forces personnel from NYS who have died in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. “We want to make sure that the sacrifices made by our sons and daughters – and their memories – are not forgotten,” says Levittown resident Nancy Fuentes, whose son, Spc. Exercise Through Roller Skating
October is National Roller Skating Month and the Roller Skating Association International is encouraging children and adults alike to get exercise through a safe, healthy and fun activity – roller skating. Lauren Fink, event coordinator of United Skates of America, is encouraging children and adults to get out from in front of the television and enjoy the sport of skating by offering a free family skate session for the Long Island community.The session is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon. The free family day will feature skating instructors on hand to help beginner skaters. There will be character appearances, games, trivia, give-aways and more. The admission fee is waived for all participants.

Marine and Outdoor Recreation Expo
This year’s expo will feature exhibits on solar energy, green technology, renewable energy, and environmental protection and conservation. Additional activities will include touch-tank displays, face painting, kayaking, fly-fishing and surf casting lessons, snapper fishing and more. The event is free to the public and guests of all ages are encouraged to attend. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Jones Beach West End Boat Basin. The usual Jones Beach $8 parking fee still applies.

Food Allergy Walk
The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network’s Walk for Food Allergy: Moving Toward A Cure will take place at Eisenhower Park, East Meadow, as well as online, to raise money for food allergy research and education. Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk

The Council of Auxiliaries of United Cerebral Palsy of NC, Inc., invite you to Fashion Fantasy 2011, on Oct. 19 at The Carltun in Eisenhower Park. Dinner is at 7:30 p.m., with hors d’oeuvres and cash bar preceding it at 6:30 p.m. Fashions are by Debra Van Horn with furs by Maximilian. The honoree this year is Julie Marchesella, past president of the Merrick Chamber of Commerce, currently vice president of the NC Council of Chambers and owner of Queen of Hearts in Merrick, a generous supporter, advocate and friend of ucpn for many years. The event is one of the largest fund raisers produced by council and helps support the programs ucpn provides for more than 1,800 children and adults with disabilities. Long Island Fall Prairie Walk
Ever see a prairie? You do not have to go west. The Friends of Hempstead Plains at Nassau Community College is conducting walks on the 19-acre remnant LI prairie, once 60,000 acres. With few trees it was a habitat of the sun with 250 species of flowers and grasses – many at their tallest and most colorful in the fall. Walks are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Fridays, Sept. Oct. 21 and 28; Nov. 4. Nassau Community College Professor of biology Betsy Gulotta, Conservation Project manager, leads people on a path as she points to goldenrods, butterfly weed and blue curls, and identifies the interesting (as their names suggest) grasses: big bluestem and little bluestem, prairie beard grass, Indian grass and switchgrass, all populating the western prairies. Directions: take Meadowbrook Pky. to Exit M4, follow signs to Coliseum, Museum Row and Charles Lindbergh Blvd. Once on Charles Lindbergh Blvd., turn right into East Parking Area for Nassau Community College. See Hempstead Plains entrance at first intersection.

Levittown Historical Society and Museum
The organization collects, preserves and educates history of Levittown. Holds seven yearly general meetings in the Community Room of the Levittown Library and maintains the museum located in the Levittown Memorial Education Center, Room 10, 150 Abbey Ln., Levittown. The museum contains history of Levittown, WWII memorabilia, artifacts from the Levitt houses, toys, furniture, clothing of the ‘40s and ‘50s, replicas of the Levitt kitchen and the Levitt ranch living room.
