The annual Levittown Fire Prevention Open House will be held at the Gardiners Avenue Fire Headquarters from 6 to 9 p.m. Workshops, displays, raffles, videos, truck rides, hands-on demonstrations. Pumpkin Patch
The Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church, 1845 Wantagh Ave., Wantagh, will be holding its annual Pumpkin Patch. There will be gourds and corn stalks available. The hours are Monday – Friday from 1 to 7 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. It will be open through Oct. 31 on the front lawn of the church.
Wantagh Fire Department Open House
The program will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. at fire headquarters, 3470 Park Ave., Wantagh. Certificates will be presented to children who participated in the Fire Prevention Poster Contest held in the local elementary schools. Various demonstrations will be presented on the extinguishment of stove fires and the use of the Jaws of Life (Hurst Tool) used in automobile extrication. Children will be taught Stop, Drop and Roll procedures and the two department robots, Spot and Furball will interact with the youngsters. Free blood pressure screening will be made available and the “Smoke House” will be utilized to present and participate in escape procedures from the home. Information will be available on Smoke Detectors as well as Carbon Monoxide Detectors and more. Light refreshments will be served.

Walk to Prevent Suicide

New Shalom Sunday Family Play Group

Gray Wolf Program
The Nassau Hiking and Outdoor Club hosts 4 or 5 educational programs each year. These programs, which take place at the Special Events Building in Eisenhower Park, cover a wide variety of topics relating to the outdoors. The programs are free of charge and open to the public. The next program is scheduled 7 p.m. A representative from the National Wolfwatcher Coalition will discuss the re-introduction of the gray wolf into Yellowstone National Park as well as their work with regional wolves. Fashion Fantasy 2011
The Council of Auxiliaries of United Cerebral Palsy of NC, Inc., invite you to Fashion Fantasy 2011, at The Carltun in Eisenhower Park. Dinner is at 7:30 p.m., with hors d’oeuvres and cash bar preceding it at 6:30 p.m. Fashions are by Debra Van Horn with furs by Maximilian. The honoree this year is Julie Marchesella, past president of the Merrick Chamber of Commerce, currently vice president of the NC Council of Chambers and owner of Queen of Hearts in Merrick, a generous supporter, advocate and friend of ucpn for many years. The event is one of the largest fund raisers produced by council and helps support the programs ucpn provides for more than 1,800 children and adults with disabilities. Breast Cancer Awareness Expo/Walk
Hosted by Nassau Community College at 11:30 a.m. in front of the Physical Education Complex. The one-mile walk – which is open to the public and has a suggested donation of $5 – is sponsored by the Design Innovators Club; the Intramural Well-Being Programs; the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department; and the Cure for Cancer Club. The 11:30 a.m. expo features T-shirts and refreshments. The walk itself begins at noon. Profits from the event will be donated to Mid-Nassau Lend a Helping Hand, Inc. The focus of LAHH is to provide customized services to patients to relieve some of the stress and worry a cancer diagnosis and ensuing treatment creates. Free Rabies Vaccine Clinic
Last Hope Animal Rescue (www.lasthopeanimalrescue.org) will be hosting a free rabies vaccine clinic for dogs and cats at the Last Hope Adoption Center, 3300 Beltagh Ave., Wantagh, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.. All Long Island pet owners are eligible; no appointment necessary, but all pets must be at least four months old. Dogs must be leashed and cats need to be in carriers. In addition, Last Hope is offering canine and feline distemper combination shots at the discounted price of $12 per vaccine. The Center for the Alignment of Body, Mind and Spirit be sponsoring a food drive for the Harry Chapin Food Bank from Oct. 24 through Oct. 29. Harvest Dinner
Come one, come all! Thanksgiving comes early to Wantagh. On Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m., the Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church, 1845 Wantagh Ave., Wantagh, will be hosting its famous Harvest Dinner – turkey with all the trimmings, lots of desserts, too. Reservations are required. Cost is $13 per adult and $9 per child. Children under 5 years old are free. Something new this year – orders to go are available. Long Island Fall Prairie Walk
Ever see a prairie? You do not have to go west. The Friends of Hempstead Plains at Nassau Community College is conducting walks on the 19-acre remnant LI prairie, once 60,000 acres. With few trees it was a habitat of the sun with 250 species of flowers and grasses – many at their tallest and most colorful in the fall. Walks are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Fridays, Sept. Oct. 21 and 28; Nov. 4. Nassau Community College Professor of biology Betsy Gulotta, Conservation Project manager, leads people on a path as she points to goldenrods, butterfly weed and blue curls, and identifies the interesting (as their names suggest) grasses: big bluestem and little bluestem, prairie beard grass, Indian grass and switchgrass, all populating the western prairies. Directions: take Meadowbrook Pky. to Exit M4, follow signs to Coliseum, Museum Row and Charles Lindbergh Blvd. Once on Charles Lindbergh Blvd., turn right into East Parking Area for Nassau Community College. Port North Basketball
Port North is a 3 year old independent basketball team based out of Port Washington that plays year round in the super league at Island Garden and various tournaments in the metropolitan area. While the team has enjoyed success winning championships in 7th and 8th grade divisions this past season the emphasis is on teaching the fundamentals, developing good practice habits and preparing players for middle and high school basketball. The team has a professional trainer with over 20 years experience. We are currently looking for several experienced players in 6th, 7th and 8th grades and a forward for a 9th grade team. Levittown Historical Society and Museum
The organization collects, preserves and educates history of Levittown. Holds seven yearly general meetings in the Community Room of the Levittown Library and maintains the museum located in the Levittown Memorial Education Center, Room 10, 150 Abbey Ln., Levittown. The museum contains history of Levittown, WWII memorabilia, artifacts from the Levitt houses, toys, furniture, clothing of the ‘40s and ‘50s, replicas of the Levitt kitchen and the Levitt ranch living room.
