Free Shredding Day
For the community, conducted by Astoria Federal Savings, 3105 Hempstead Tpke., Levittown, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free paper shredding and recycling of personal documents. Suitable items for shredding may include pay stubs from previous tax years, year-old bank statements, credit card applications and statements, and any documents with social security numbers, signatures, private contact information or personal identification numbers. Shredding is limited to eight boxes of confidential documents per person. The documents will be shredded on site and then be recycled by Cintas Document Management. Country Fair

Long Island Fall Prairie Walk
Ever see a prairie? You do not have to go west. The Friends of Hempstead Plains at Nassau Community College is conducting walks on the 19-acre remnant LI prairie, once 60,000 acres. With few trees it was a habitat of the sun with 250 species of flowers and grasses – many at their tallest and most colorful in the fall. Walks are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Fridays, Oct. 28 and Nov. 4. Nassau Community College Professor of Biology Betsy Gulotta, Conservation Project manager, leads people on a path as she points to goldenrods, butterfly weed and blue curls, and identifies the interesting (as their names suggest) grasses: big bluestem and little bluestem, prairie beard grass, Indian grass and switchgrass, all populating the western prairies. Directions: take Meadowbrook Pky. to Exit M4, follow signs to Coliseum, Museum Row and Charles Lindbergh Blvd. Once on Charles Lindbergh Blvd., turn right into East Parking Area for Nassau Community College. See Hempstead Plains entrance at first intersection.

The Soldiers’ Angels Organization needs individually wrapped prepackaged from manufacturer items: hard candy, Life Savers, licorice, gum, jaw breakers, gum balls, mints, jelly beans, sunflower seeds, nuts, crackers, pretzels, Slim Jim beef jurky (beef only – no pork products), Trail Mix, dried fruit, granola bars, protein bars. Food Drive
The Center for the Alignment of Body, Mind and Spirit be sponsoring a food drive for the Harry Chapin Food Bank from Oct. 24 through Oct. 29. Donations of nonperishable food items can be dropped off at 2050 Wantagh Ave., Wantagh, during our normal business hours. (Monday-Wednesday-Friday 9-1 and 3-7, Tuesday 4-7, Saturday 9:30-12:30. The Harry Chapin Food Bank provides emergency food where and when it is needed, sponsors programs that help families achieve self-sufficiency, and educates the general public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.
Levittown Pumpkin Patch
Levittown’s Pumpkin Patch is now open with a beautiful crop of dark orange pumpkins from the Navajo Indians in New Mexico. The Pumpkin Patch is always free admission, offering music, stickers, fun inflatables, and costume characters for the children. There is food available, roasted sweet corn, hay bales, corn stalks, and beautiful Long Island grown flowers at discount prices. Again, this year we offer an additional backyard adventure: a pay-one-price of only $3.75 per person 3 and older: A fun corn maze, inflatables and animals. This is located on the back area and is optional. Affordable fun is only minutes away from you. Pumpkin Patch
The Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church, 1845 Wantagh Ave., Wantagh, will be holding its annual Pumpkin Patch. There will be gourds and corn stalks available. The hours are Monday – Friday from 1 to 7 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. It will be open through Oct. 31 on the front lawn of the church.
Port North 7th Grade Super League Basketball
Port North is a 3 year old independent basketball team based out of Port Washington that plays year round in the super league at Island Garden and various tournaments in the metropolitan area. While the team has enjoyed success winning championships in 7th and 8th grade divisions this past season the emphasis is on teaching the fundamentals, developing good practice habits and preparing players for middle and high school basketball. The team has a professional trainer with over 20 years experience. We are currently looking for experienced players for next season. We have spots on teams for boys in the 7th grade next September. Levittown Historical Society and Museum
The organization collects, preserves and educates history of Levittown. Holds seven yearly general meetings in the Community Room of the Levittown Library and maintains the museum located in the Levittown Memorial Education Center, Room 10, 150 Abbey Ln., Levittown. The museum contains history of Levittown, WWII memorabilia, artifacts from the Levitt houses, toys, furniture, clothing of the ‘40s and ‘50s, replicas of the Levitt kitchen and the Levitt ranch living room. Levittown’s Brass and Percussion
A nonprofit organization that will teach kids, ages 8 to 88, to play an instrument and have fun parading, performing, competing and many social events. Free of charge.
