Cheshire Scores Double Figures In Ninth Straight Game

Senior guard William Cheshire scored in double figures for the ninth straight game and the MacArthur boys’ basketball team moved closer to its fourth playoff appearance in the past six seasons with a 47-45 win against Calhoun on Jan. 20.

Senior guard Tyler Eppich’s three-pointer with two minutes remaining gave the Generals a five-point lead. After Calhoun answered with a three-pointer to move within 45-43, Cheshire sank one-and-one free throws with 17.5 seconds to go for the decisive points.

Cheshire finished with a game-high 13 points, and is averaging 14.7 points per game. Kevin Roach had 11 points, Gerard Cunningham 8, Eppich 6 and Ryan Walsh 4.

The Generals, who lost at Hicksville 59-44 earlier in the week despite 17 points from Cheshire, now are 8-3 overall.

Baldwin is unbeaten in Conference AA-II at 8-0, followed by MacArthur and Hicksville at 5-3, Valley Stream Central and Plainview JFK at 4-4, Calhoun and Port Washington at 3-5, and East Meadow at 0-8. The top four finishers after the completion of the 14-game league schedule qualify for the playoffs.

MacArthur next plays host to Plainview JFK on Friday, Jan. 27 at 6:15 p.m. The Generals won the first meeting, 46-44, on Dec. 20.
