Defensive Driving Course
Knights of Columbus #11836 at St Anne’s Church in Garden City is offering the community the Empire Safety Council’s Defensive Driving Course from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the St Anne’s Church LL Cafeteria, 35 Dartmouth St. Upon completion of this course, participants are eligible for 10 percent off their motor vehicle insurance for three years and/or a reduction of points from their driver’s license. The fee for the course is $45 per person and advance registration is required. Craft Fair/Flea Market
St. Elisabeth’s Episcopal Church, 6 Harvard St., Floral Park (off Tulip Ave.) will hold its semi-annual Craft Fair/Flea Market from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Upwards of 48 vendors from all over Long Island will present their wares – hand-made items, crafts, white elephants, books, jewelry, household items, new items, etc. Vendors from Mary Kay and Avon will also be present. Refreshments will be served.

Public Meeting on Fracking
Come for a discussion about hydraulic fracturing and what can be done about it. Fracking threatens our air, water and food. Community leaders and concerned residents will come together to show elected officials that their leadership is needed in keeping fracking out of New York. Ladies Night Out
The Floral Park Woman’s Club will hold its Ladies Night Out on Friday, May 4 at St. Elisabeth’s Church, Harvard St., Floral Park, at 7 p.m. Come and enjoy delicious hors d’oeuvres, tasty desserts, wine, soda, coffee and tea. After enjoying these refreshments, tables of four or more are available to play cards, games of your choice, or visit with friends. Fabulous prizes are available at our raffle tables. Port North Spring Boys Basketball
Port North is a 3-year-old independent basketball team based out of Port Washington that plays year round in the super league at Island Garden and various tournaments in the metropolitan area. The program currently has a combined record of 30 – 3 in the winter super league. The emphasis is on teaching the fundamentals, developing good practice habits and preparing players for middle and high school basketball. The team has a professional trainer with more than 20 years experience. We are currently looking for experienced and dedicated basketball players in grades four through 10 who are interested in trying out for spring and AAU basketball. The program reaches out to women with cancer and teaches them how to best apply makeup and wear their hair while undergoing cancer treatment. •Free/Low Cost Health Insurance. The residents of communities served by Mercy Medical Center will have the opportunity to apply for free or low cost health insurance for children, families and adults up to age 64 on the first Thursday of every month from 5 to 7 p.m. in Mercy’s Main Lobby. Staff from Catholic Charities of LI will assist you and our children applying for Child Health Plus, Family Health Plus and Medicaid Health Insurance Programs. The bi-lingual enrollers will screen adults for income eligibility for the state’s health insurance program Family Health Plus. Children are eligible for Child Health Plus. These programs cover medical check-ups, hospitalization, emergency care, prescriptions, vision and dental care.
•Zonta Club of LI, a member of Zonta International, a worldwide service organization with a local club. Members help advance the status of women and are involved in many community service activities. The name Zonta is word taken from the Sioux and stands for honesty, trust, inspiration and the ability to work together for service and understanding. At meetings members discuss and learn about issues facing women, develop and conduct fun fundraising that benefits community programs and network with Zonta International programs. •Free Puppet Show on Seizure Disorder. A free children’s program on epilepsy using the internationally acclaimed “Kids on the Block” troupe of puppets to public and private elementary schools. These shows are appropriate for the 3rd and 4th grades levels but can be tailored to your needs. Programs are also available for junior and senior high classes. Provides free transportation to and from medical appointments for senior citizens who are residents of the Floral Park/Bellerose area and cannot afford cab fare or who have no other means of transportation.
