The Island Trees girls U11 soccer team recently traveled to Pennsylvania to compete in the Pocono Whitewater Soccer Tournament. The trip was a great success as the girls took first place with a 3-0 record.
The Island Trees Shooting Stars won the bracket with 5-3 and 6-2 wins over teams from Wyoming Valley, PA and Coplay, PA.
The championship game was played against Greencastle, PA. The Shooting Stars prevailed in a tight game 3-2 on a goal by tournament MVP Brenna Glover with 30 seconds left to play in regulation time. Kathryn Mullin stole a goal kick and made a great pass leading to deciding goal. Glover had 10 goals total. Mullin and Meghan Schroeder chipped in with two goals each.
Julia Minafo led the midfield, with strong play by Jamie Laub and Krissy Welsh. Olivia Christiano, who played every second of the three-game tournament, anchored the defense. Tara Schroeder, Alexis Quealy and Sierra Chelune joined her. Madison Tierney and Angela Sutch handled the goaltending duties and both excelled in goal and on the field. Emily Garbacki and Shauna Fowler were unable to make the trip to Pennsylvania.
The Shooting Stars are also having success in the Long Island Junior Soccer League this season. Deb Minafo, Rich Christiano and Ed Mullin coach the team.
