Legion post hosts 1st Marine Corps District
American Legionnaires at Post #1033 offered up their post headquarters for the night to host the 1st Marine Corps District’s ‘Mess Night’ for more than 80 locally stationed marine officers.
The officers, dressed in full winter dress uniform arrived at the post by the busload and were treated to, cocktail hour on the first floor hall, while preparations were being finalized in the lower hall for their banquet, which included Marine Corps anthems and song, a privately catered meal and other traditions of the “mess night” event.
The Marine Corps “Mess Night” is an exclusive, formal tradition, an honor gathering with the purpose of paying tribute to all of the immeasurable qualities that the military unit stands for. The meticulous attention given to this formal event is based on traditions derived from the Vikings, British Navy, centuries old monasteries, and early universities.
Chief Warrant Officer Edmond G. Farah (USMC-Retired) was presented to the officers as the guest of honor before the ceremony formally concluded and many of the members of the 1st Marine Corps District then returned to Tun Tavern in Garden City for some informal revelry.
