The MacArthur boys’ varsity basketball team tips off its 2012-13 season against rival Division High School on Thursday, Dec. 6, in the opening round of the annual Jeff Shaw Memorial Tournament. The tournament’s opening round also features a first-round matchup between Massapequa and Valley Stream North. The championship and consolation games will be held at MacArthur on Dec. 7.
The Generals return six members from last season’s squad, which qualified for the playoffs for the fourth time in the past six years: guards Gerard Cunningham, Tom McAndrew, Brendan Smith and Ryan Walsh and forwards Kevin Olsen and Andrew Seniuk.
MacArthur won last December’s Jeff Shaw Memorial Tournament by beating Island Trees in the finals, 55-38, behind 20 points from forward Kevin Roach. Roach made his college basketball debut on Nov.16 for SUNY New Paltz.
MacArthur has three other nonleague games during the 2012-13 season: at Lawrence on Dec. 14, at Valley Stream South on Dec. 28 and at North Shore on Dec. 29.
The Generals again will play in Conference AA-II. MacArthur’s league opponents are Baldwin (home: Feb. 11, away Jan. 15), East Meadow (home: Dec. 21, away: Jan. 29), Hicksville (home: Jan. 4, away: Feb. 1), Plainview JFK (home: Jan. 11, away: Feb. 8) Port Washington (home: Jan. 25, away Dec. 18) and Valley Stream Central (home: Feb. 5, away: Jan. 8).
