Every year in Nassau County, more than 200 women – mothers, daughters, wives and friends – die from breast cancer. According to the New York Cancer Registry, an average of 1,265 cases of breast cancer are reported annually within Nassau County.
Levittown resident Holly Gillin’s bra creation, “The Looking Feathers,” is one way in which many Nassau County residents are providing physical and moral support for those suffering from breast cancer.
“My mother is my angel; she watches over me from heaven above,” said Gillin. “I feel her strength and beauty around me in all that I do; despite her struggles, my mother never gave up hope.”
Gillian hopes that one day, mothers, daughter, and sisters “will rise above breast cancer with their inner strength and beauty.” Her creation is explained, peacock feathers are a symbol of strength and beauty; ancient Greeks believed the goddess Hera placed eyes in the peacock’s feathers to symbolize the all-seeing knowledge of the heavens.
Wantagh residents Lisa Sinacori, Ginny Kotoucek, Heather Leonhardt, Kristin Motschwiller, and Amanda Sinobio, each have submissions in the program. Their work, along with dozens of other bras from the Creative Cups program, will be showcased at Adelphi University on March 14 and auctioned as part of Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support program.
Creative Cups, now in its third year, “encourages artistic expression in celebration of the lives of those living with breast cancer and those we have lost to this terrible disease,” according to the organization’s website.
