Under dark cloudy skies, Coach Bob Fehrenbach and the MacArthur Lady Generals, defending Long Island champions, ended their season with a 12-1 loss after forcing a third game in the best of three series from East Meadow.
MacArthur had a great run this year and excited the crowds with two great comebacks during the playoff season. The first was against a tough Mepham team in the semifinals when the Generals trailed 4-0. A burst of energy tied the score in the 6th inning and in the top of the 9th Katie Fitzsimmons double scored Jenna Cozza from first base and the Generals won 5-4.
In the Class AA Finals MacArthur was trailing East Meadow 5-2 in the 6th inning but strong bats prevailed as the Generals had seven runs in the bottom of the 6th creating a 9-6 victory. Ashley Massoni, Fitzsimmons, Kristin Daly and Kristen Arbiter all had RBIs in the inning.
Cozza, Massoni, Fitzsimmons and Daly were selected as All County recipients; Arbiter received All Conference recognition and Kirsten Kelley and Nicolette Moustouka were honored with All League awards.
This year’s team roster included seniors Cozza, Daly, Fitzsimmons, and Krissy Gay, juniors Arbiter, Lyndsey Balder, Brianne Barry, Megan Galli, Kelly and Massoni, sophmores Kaycie Haller, Jen Masessa and Moustouka and 8th grader Shannon Myles.
The team saw an overall record of 15-11 this season and will send Cozza to play for UMass and Gay to Southern Connecticut.
Coach Fehrenbach brings a rich resume to softball having been the JV coach 1996 and 1997, assistant head coach 1998 to 2000, and head varsity coach from 2001 until present.
