The Island Trees girls’ varsity soccer team clinched their conference title this Saturday defeating Valley Stream North (VSN) in a very physical, intense 1-0 game. Five minutes into the contest, Alexa Dolgos volleyed a shot into the net for the lone goal of the game. Equally impressive, Brianna Wilson had her ninth shutout of the season and ended the game with 14 incredible saves.
The Lady Dawgs solid defense: Kristen Breihof, Ashley Jones, KellyAnn Jorgensen, Megan Fischer, and Katie Paz helped shutdown the VSN offensive threats. Following this game, the girls capped off their season on Monday, defeating Manhasset 1-0. Fittingly, the girls worked very hard this season as a single unit and finished with a league record of 10-1-1 and an overall record of 11-1-2. Each of the 19 players made significant contributions to the positive outcome of this season.
Incredibly, the Lady Dawgs outscored their opponents by thirty-seven (37) goals this season and their tenacious defense only allowed six goals. Proudly, the midfielders and strikers worked together to net 43 total goals. Dolgos led the offense with 11 goals and 10 assists. Melissa Jorgensen, Alicia Buchanan, Michelle Merrill, and Jessica Petry combined for 12 goals and 7 assists. Seniors Gabby Petito, Jess Bohorquez, and Breihof combined for eight goals and six assists. Wilson finished the regular season with 10 shutouts and 143 saves. In fact, the girls have not allowed a goal in the last nine games. Maggie Hastings and Nicole Mignone have been very tough midfielders with smart distribution skills. Kaeley Johnston, backup goalkeeper, finished off two shutout games. Michaela Siegler and Corinne Carroll contributed both on and off the field enhancing team morale.
