In a show of community response, Port Washington has organized a concert to aid those that were devastated by Typhoon Yolanda (otherwise known as Typhoon Haiyan).

The evening of classical music, called “A Classic Night at The Landmark,” will feature world-renowned pianist Martin Söderberg and 11-year-old pianist Benjamin Rossen. Both pianists have played at Carnegie Hall, among other venues.

The evening was put together by local residents who have family in the Philippines and members of the Port Washington Crisis Relief Team, a group that came together after Hurricane Sandy. Landmark on Main Street, where the event will be held Saturday, Dec. 7, is helping to defray ticket costs. The Peter & Jeri Dejana Family Foundation is sponsoring the event by paying Landmark’s rental fee. DLA Piper has pledged to match donations up to $5,000.

“Hurricane Sandy was an inconvenience compared to the losses that resulted from Typhoon Yolanda,” said Debbie Greco, a board member of the Port Washington Crisis Relief Team. “Working together, we felt we had to do something.”

Accomplished mezzo-soprano Elena Diaz-Acosta and violinist Chie Yoshinaka will accompany Rossen and Soderberg. Benjamin’s mother, Myrna, and Aunt Maya, who lives in Port Washington, have a very large family in The Philippines, many of who have suffered great losses. Performers from Schreiber High School and others will round out this special musical evening.

Tickets for all seats are $20 each. They can be purchased and donations can be made online at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/522688 or by calling 1-800-838-3006 or by emailing debbiegreco@verizon.net (Debbie can answer any questions about the event). A raffle with high-value prizes will raise additional donations. Email to purchase tickets or if you have any questions about the event. Ticket and raffle purchases and donations are all tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.

Light refreshments will be served before the concert and during intermission. At the conclusion of the concert, raffle winners will be called. Winners need not be present to claim their prize.

The theater will open at 7 p.m. for seating selection, refreshments and additional raffle ticket sales, and the concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.
