Obituary: Rufus Evans Sr.

Rufus Evans Sr., 82 of Glen Cove, passed away Monday, April 7, 2014 in Freeport. He was born on Oct. 8, 1931 in Accomac County, VA, to the late Eretta West and the late Vern Evans. Rufus was the oldest child of his siblings, Rose and Reginald; who are deceased. As a young man he worked hard as a laborer and relocated north, settling a new life in Oyster Bay. Rufus married the late Mary Elisabeth Green and this union parented seven children, six daughters and one son. Rufus worked for the Department of Transportation Highways as a construction worker until retirement.

Rufus was a social man, who was known by the community to stop and talk about his hobbies (hunting) and old time remedies. Rufus later in his life moved to Glen Cove and remarried. Rufus was a member of the First Baptist Church of Glen Cove, where he enjoyed the gospel and good word. Rufus was known to speak his mind and debate anyone who was willing to take the challenge. The best characteristic about Rufus was his sense of humor, we all know he knew how to put a smile on your face and make you laugh. Rufus loved the bible and the word of “God.” We want to remember Rufus as a giving man.

Rufus leaves his loving family and friends with memories; six daughters: Denise (Michael) Yeargin, Bowie, MD; Mary (Kim) Walker, Glen Cove; Beverly (Trent) Levine, Harlem; Ruby Murray, Oyster Bay; Barbara Ann Gibson, Glen Cove; Diane Cortes (Leroy), Far Rockaway; one son, Rufus Lee (Victoria) Evans Jr. Rufus was blessed with a total of 50 grand- and great-grandchildren. Nieces and nephews, God daughters, four sisters in-laws and one brother in law, his best friend Woodro Vann, and a host of friends.

Rufus is preceded in death by both of his parents, sister, brother and ex-wife.
