With the start of summer comes lazy days by the pool and picnics in the park. But the Hicksville Public Library wants to make sure reading’s also on the top of your child’s summer to-do list. Signups for the popular summer reading program start June 30.
Children will be rewarded a prize when they give in a list of books they read to the librarian. Children can also bring in a picture or small report about the book and the library will create a summer reading club magazine of all their pictures and stories, which will be handed out at the program’s final show.
Children’s librarian Joanne Gramaglia says the program usually has good participation, with approximately 300 participants each year. She notes that kids and parents are already asking when it will begin.
“We want to keep them in the groove of reading so they don’t lose what skills they have acquired during the school year over the summer,” says Gramaglia.
In addition to reading, the library will host a special program for kindergarten through fifth graders each week around the science theme “Fizz Boom Read.” A Fire and Ice show will kickoff the program on July 2.
The six week summer reading program ends August 20 with a shadow puppet show.
