Something about the warmth and sunshine of summer makes it the perfect season for lounging around.
On July 26, the Levittown Community Council hosted its 17th annual Lazy Days of Summer Picnic at the East Village Green Park for families to take advantage of this season of relaxation and laidback fun free of charge.
The DJ played Latin songs as children shook neon colored macarenas and followed the dance moves of a Zumba instructor. Other children enjoyed pony rides, shooting hoops, playing Can Jam and
Tug-of-War, petting farm animals, jumping in a bouncy castle, and fishing for plastic fish in a kiddie pool.
Two-year-old Milania Depasquale of Levittown wore a silver party hat larger than her head as she danced along to the music played at the event.
“She loves music,” said her grandfather Rick Seymour. “What kid doesn’t?”
Kelly Conklin of Levittown agreed as she watched her son join other children in dancing and singing to “Gangham Style” onstage.
“I love this,” Conklin said. “Today is his birthday and he’s having so much fun.”
Children scrambled around the park with balloon hats, painted faces and their mouths stained from Italian Ices from Uncle Luie G’s. They blew bubbles and enjoyed refreshing watermelon from one of the stands.
Parents also joined in on the fun as they lifted up a colorful parachute for the children to run under and participated in 50/50 raffles.
A pirate reenactment group called Ye Pyrate Brotherhood entertained guests as they ran amok wearing their 17th century historical pirate garb.
“This is a really nice family fun event,” said Levittown resident Frances Avnet of Ye Pyrate Brotherhood. “It gets the community together,” she said. “We got perfect weather. It’s free and people can come and go as they please. It is really just a good day for everyone.”
