Woodbury’s Dale Flashner, director of the graphic design program at Adelphi University’s Department of Art & Art History, and Eliz Alahverdian, the director of exhibitions at Adelphi, have paid homage to NBC’s Pat Battle with the creation of an art bra entitled “The Glittering Garden of Hope (Part 2).”
Battle, a breast cancer survivor and co-anchor of NBC’s Weekend Today in New York, will be the host at a fund raising event called Creative Cups to be held at Adelphi University in Garden City on March 19, 2015. For Creative Cups, participants take ordinary bras and turn them into works of art that are auctioned to benefit the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline, which is housed at Adelphi’s School of Social Work. Battle was the chair of the event when it occurred in 2013.
“I was thoroughly inspired hearing Pat share her personal story with breast cancer at the Celebration of Survivorship hosted by Adelphi’s Breast Cancer Hotline in 2012 and then connecting with her during Creative Cups 2013,” said Flashner.
Flashner and Alahverdian decided to pay homage to Battle for her dedication and support of the program. They used as their inspiration the bra that Battle and her daughter, Clarke, had created in 2013, called The Glittering Garden of Hope, using the same elements that the mother and daughter had used — butterflies, flowers and some glitz. “We stayed true to Pat’s words and tried to illustrate the ‘fragility of life’ and the need to ‘tend our lives like a garden, with loving care,’” said Flashner.
Flashner says there is still time for people to participate in Creative Cups. Submitted creations must be received by October 15, 2014, to be included in the auction/gala. Those wishing to create a bra are encouraged to sign up early, as entrants will be limited to 200.
