See Unbroken at the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Library, 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Olympian and war hero Louis Zamperini survived in a raft for 47 days after a near-fatal plane crash in WWII, only to be caught by the Japanese Navy and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp. Rabbi Book Lecture
Town of Oyster Bay Chabad invites all to hear the inspiring words of renowned lecturer Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, author of best selling book Rebbe. Telushkin discusses the life of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, founder of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement at 7:30 p.m. at the Sid Jacobson JCC, 300 Forest Dr., Greenvale.
Author Lecture
The Friends of Sagamore Hill will present the second John A. Gable lecture at 7 p.m. in Christ Church Parish Hall, when biographer Chip Bishop returns to Oyster Bay to discuss his work to date on his upcoming book, A Tortured Soul: Elliott Roosevelt—Brother of a President, Father of a First Lady. Bishop’s previous two books, The Lion and the Journalist: The Unlikely Friendship of Theodore Roosevelt and Joseph Bucklin Bishop, and Quentin & Flora: A Roosevelt and Vanderbilt in Love during the Great War have been hailed by historians, reviewers, and readers alike. Celebrate May Fundraiser
The community is invited to an evening of live music, dancing and tapas-style land and sea cuisine from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. for the Life Enrichment Center at Oyster Bay’s “Celebrate May” annual community fundraiser. Proceeds benefit the center’s programs providing healthy activities for the body and mind to people age 60-plus in Bayville, Oyster Bay, Oyster Bay Cove, and East Norwich, as well as Brookville, Lattingtown, Locust Valley, Matinecock, Mill Neck and Muttontown. $65 per person. Designer’s Showcase
Mill Neck Manor Mansions and Millionaires Designer’s Showcase opens, a benefit for the Mill Neck School for the Deaf. The art and design showcase will be open from now through June 14. Long Island Youth Orchestra Concert
The Long Island Youth Orchestra will present the third concert of its 53rd Season with a performance on Sunday, May 3, at 7 p.m. at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts at LIU Post, 720 Northern Blvd. in Brookville. Scott J. Dunn, music director and conductor of the Long Island Youth Orchestra, will conduct LIYO in a concert of orchestral music including Rossini: “Overture to La Gazza Laddra,” Dvorak: “Symphony No. 8 in G Major” and the “orchestra choice” Mussorgsky: “Night on Bald Mountain.”
Each spring, students in LIYO nominate and vote on which orchestral piece they would like to include in the third concert of the season. LIYO recently participated in a New York Philharmonic Educational Residency at Tilles Center, which focused on Dvorak’s “Symphony No. 8.” Tickets priced at $15 for adults and $10 for students/seniors will be available one hour prior to the concert. Mom’s Soft Clutch
At Oyster Bay-East Norwich Library from 4 to 5 p.m., for kids ages 3 to 5 with an adult. Decorate a large clutch for Mother’s Day using flowers, gems, birds and a frame for your picture (bring a wallet size photo with you). Registration began in April for OB-EN residents and begins on May 4 for nonresidents, space permitting.
Mom’s Message Center
At Oyster Bay-East Norwich Library from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., for kids ages 6 and up. Create a great organizing spot for Mom to leave messages or write a shopping list using wood, a mirror, clip board, gems and glitter paint. Registration began in April for OB-EN residents and begins on May 4 for non-residents, space permitting.
