The annual Memorial Day parade returns to Hicksville Monday, May 25 and is expected to once again draw hundreds of marchers, as well as onlookers who are honoring the community’s veterans.
This year’s parade is being hosted by the American Legion, under the direction of Commander Gregory Faling. The parade will step off at 9 a.m. from the Sears parking lot at 195 N. Broadway. It will turn left and head south along Broadway to Old Country Road. At Old Country Road, it will turn west until it reaches Jerusalem Avenue. At Jerusalem Avenue, it will turn south and proceed to 4th Street where it will end by Hicksville Middle School. At approximately 10:30 a.m., the Memorial Day ceremonies will take place at the Middle School’s Veterans Memorial Park.
According to Faling, this year’s parade is expected to draw even more groups than last year.
“We’ve gotten a good response,” he said. “I think we’ve touched every organization in Hicksville—churches, religious groups, schools, dance groups. As long as they function in the community of Hicksville, we sent them a message to participate.”
Many residents will also attend the ceremony at the middle school, where school bands will perform and several veterans will speak. If it rains, the ceremony will be held in the school’s auditorium.
Faling said the day is a great way to remember all the veterans have done.
“It’s very gratifying to have a parade and have people take time out of their busy day and see them honoring our veterans,” he said.
Any other Hicksville organization that would like to participate in the parade is asked to contact Faling at 516-503-1225.
