Does the thought of walking over scalding sand with a heavy cooler of melting ice in search of a comfortable spot to set up your beach chair and umbrella after sitting in traffic on a hot summer day exhaust you? This weekend, on June 20, all of these troubles will go away when Manorhaven Beach Park Pool opens for the season.
The pool will be open every day from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. until August 16, when the pool will begin to close at 7 p.m.
The pool underwent a major renovation before the 2011 summer season. No changes have been made for this summer, other than routine seasonal maintenance, according to Carole Trottere, Director of Communications for the Town of North Hempstead.
The pool’s grounds are family friendly and well kept by the park staff. Outside of the pool, Manorhaven Beach Park has a variety of courts, picnic areas, a skate spot and a beach. Recreational opportunities that will be available to the public this summer include standup paddle board yoga, sailing lessons for kids, restructured adult sailing lessons, catamaran sailing lessons, kayak rentals and adult tennis lessons.
Swim lessons for children fill up quickly but many classes are still open. You can even have your child’s birthday party at the pool any day of the week.
Dover Catering won the bid to run the concession at the pool this summer. According to its website, Dover Catering is located in Freeport, NY and has been catering events for over 100 years. No improvements have been made this year to the concession stand, according to Trottere. Last year, there were some upgrades made to the concession stand, but that included electrical and gas-line work, not cosmetic improvements.
Upcoming fun events at Manorhaven Park include concerts performed by the Desert Highway Band and Half Step. Desert Highway Band will play a tribute to the Eagles on Saturday, July 11 at 7:30 p.m. and Half Step will be playing Grateful Dead songs on Friday, August 7 at 7:30 p.m.
There will be a sock hop with a live band on the pool deck on July 22 at 7 p.m.
If you do not want to commit to an entire summer membership, Town of North Hempstead residents can pay daily admission fees. Each resident is allowed to bring up to five guests with them each day for a fee. Guests must be accompanied by a town resident in order to enter the pool area.
Parking passes for the pool’s lot can be purchased at an annual rate or daily rates.
To register for an annual membership to the pool , bring a current driver’s license if you’re over the age of 18, and a property tax bill or lease if you are at least 21 years old. Teens are eligible for a youth membership with their school ID, bus pass, library card or report card. Nannies and seniors are also eligible for special rates.
