Landing in Port Washington at the end of June is Le Blue Bird Café. This quaint little breakfast, lunch, brunch and dessert place is a welcome addition to our peninsula. One of the owners of the new café on Main Street, Lauren Scheele, said that she chose to open in town because “she always loved Port.” The other owner is her grandfather Dennis.
“I’m a big breakfast person and I felt like this town was missing a good breakfast place,” Scheele said. “It’s great to be in a town that needs what I want to bring to the table,” she added enthusiastically.
On the inside, Le Blue Bird Café has splashes of wonderful blue colors on the walls and delicious food quotes. It’s really a place of warmth and sweet flavors. On their chalk-wall menu behind the counter is the menu: skirt steak and eggs, a sausage and pepper hash, a three-omelet quiche, Nutella-stuffed waffle, and Scheele’s favorite, the pancake French toast. It’s “to die for,” she said. They will have fruit, lots of Nutella and great toppings for all their food. Scheele said, “I try to put a twist on all my dishes, make them unique and different.”
Where did the name Le Blue Bird Café come from? Scheele’s grandmother, while growing up, was all about food. Her kitchen was warm, inviting and smelled eternally wonderful. She always sang to Scheele the song “Blue Bird On My Shoulder,” which inspired Scheele to create this stunning café that couples the comforts of home with artistic food.
The cafe will keep her grandmother’s memory alive and bring people together. Its deliciously creative food will arrive in town soon. Le Blue Bird Café is located at 170 Main St.
