In last week’s issue of the Port Washington News, Linda Portney Goldstein interviewed Michael Scotto, who is running against Acting Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas in the September 10 Democratic primary for Nassau County District Attorney. On July 20, 2015, Singas and three individually named voters filed a lawsuit in the Supreme Court of the State of New York, Nassau County, seeking to remove Scotto’s name from the Democratic Party’s primary ballot. The lawsuit alleges improprieties in the signatures on Scotto’s petition, including “fraudulent dates” and “forged signatures.” Keith Corbett of Harris Beach PLLC, the attorney who filed the lawsuit on behalf of Singas and the other petitioners, did not respond to the Port Washington News’ request for comment. Isaac Goldberg, Singas’ campaign consultant, said that he had no comment about the lawsuit.
Scotto said, “Madeline Singas and three democratic operatives, including Nassau County Democrat spokesperson Bonnie Garone, filed a lawsuit challenging my 6,355 filed signatures, more than triple the amount we need to qualify. My election lawyer is confident that we will prevail, and in his view the lawsuit was filed merely to bog us down in court and drain resources.” He continued, “It is clear to even my twelve year old son that Ms. Singas is trying to knock me off the ballot because she knows I can beat her in the primary. It’s sad that Ms. Singas and her operatives are trying to deny over 6,000 Democratic voters a chance to choose their candidate. We live in a democratic society, not a third-world country.” The lawsuit will be heard on July 29.
