Runners and walkers are invited to join in the fun for what is one of the most unusual 5K courses on Long Island, at the Lynn, Gartner, Dunne & Covello Sands Point Sprint on Sunday, August 9.
The Mineola law firm of Lynn, Gartner, Dunne & Covello will be returning as the Lead Sponsor of the event, and partners John Dunne and Ken Gartner plan to run the race. (Dunne finished last year’s sprint in 29:49, and hopes to break that mark in 2015). The Lynbrook Runner’s Stop will be back as the Presenting Sponsor. BWD Insurance and North Shore-LIJ Health System have been added to the growing roster of sponsors in 2015.
This year’s sprint will benefit the Sunrise Association, whose mission is to bring back the joys of childhood to children with cancer and their siblings worldwide, through the creation of Sunrise Day Camps, year-round programs and in-hospital recreational activities, all offered free. Sunrise Day Camps are the world’s only full summer day camps for children with cancer and their siblings. The fun, friendship and smiles continue year round through various camp-like programs and in-hospital services.
The 5K sprint presents runners and walkers with an opportunity to traverse a unique combination of paved roads and runner-friendly woodland trails at the Sands Point Preserve at the tip of the Port Washington peninsula. This year’s course will be even better than last year’s. The event manager, Greater Long Island Running Club, has modified this year’s course by adding a jaunt up to Falaise, one of the historic houses of Sands Point.
Runners and walkers who sign up for the run can expect all the usual Greater Long Island Running Club amenities: awards in five age groups, from 10 and under through 85-plus, as well as Clydesdale/Athena Awards, a T-shirt to every entrant, refreshments, and a variety of post-race door prizes. New this year are some superb post-race refreshments, courtesy of DiMaggio’s Trattoria in Port Washington and refreshing craft beers courtesy of Greenpoint Harbor Brewing Company.
