Mill Pond Acres, the 55-plus senior condo development in Port Washington, celebrated its 10-year anniversary on Labor Day. Residents in the 250-unit complex, comprised of townhouses and apartments, enjoyed a party at the clubhouse.
The construction of Mill Pond was not without controversy. Some Port Washington residents objected to a large senior development, citing traffic congestion and other problems, and informational meetings by the builder were often greeted by anger and unpleasant confrontations. Finally everything came together. Ground was broken in 2004, and the first residents moved in on June 2005.
Stanley Gerard, president of the condo board, gave a brief history of Mill Pond. He praised the many committees who work in unison to put functions such as this celebration together and make Mill Pond Acres such a desirable place to live. “Our clubhouse is the heart of our community,” he said.
Mayor Bob Weitzner spoke on behalf of the Village of Port Washington North. “Do you believe that some people did not want this complex to be built?” he said. “Reason prevailed and now Mill Pond Acres is a valued and necessary part of our village.” Plaques were then presented to three special people: Stanley Gerard honoring his years heading the condo board, Mark Leibenthal for his excellence as club manager, and lastly a special thank you to Superintendent Hugo Hernandez. Enid Hawthorne, condo board vice president, also congratulated Carol Kratenstein and her dedicated volunteers, who decorated and completed a wonderful scrapbook of history and memories of the past 10 years.
One of Mill Pond’s main attractions has been to provide senior housing for local residents who wish to remain in familiar surroundings and near their families. Most of the residents come from Port Washington and nearby towns. They all hope to enjoy many more years here and to celebrate many more anniversaries.
