What began in 1977 as a small childcare center in St. Stephen’s Church serving 32 children, The Port Washington Children’s Center outgrew two other locations before moving to its permanent home in the Landmark on Main Street building in 1995. At that time, 121 children were served. Over the decades, The Children’s Center has grown in number of children served, as well as the age ranges and programs offered. Their year-round program provides care and learning for up to 92 early childhood and 170 school-age children. The Children’s Center offers childcare, pre-K, before/after school care and Port Day Camp in the summer months.
On May 3, a gala honoring all past presidents of The Children’s Center was held at The Swan Club. Nearly half of the past presidents honored were in attendance. All past presidents are Howard Blankman, Christine Kiernan, Barbara Goldstein, Roberta McNeil, Barbara Miller, Nancy Ulrich, Arlene Labenson, Sally Scott, Susan Bagnini, Claudia Rouhana, Toby Koren, Ginny Cook, Bob McGuire, Pat Latzman, Anne Shkuda, Andy London, Kathy Zankel, Pamela Tarica, Judy Cutaia, Lloyd Herman, Candy Scheer, Dorothy Conroy Rule, Doris Novick, Barbara Ring, Doreen Berne, Sandra Josyln, Reddy Rosaya, Lynn Capuano, David Beatus and Irene D’Antonio.
“On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of the Port Washington Children’s Center, I wish to thank our past presidents and everyone else who has given their precious time over the past four decades,” Children’s Center Executive Director Donna Preminger said. “These amazing people are what keeps our Center moving forward and continuing to enhance the nurturing, learning experience our children receive.”
The Port Washington Children’s Center offers children from 18 months to 12 years of age safe, nurturing, year-round early childhood care and learning. The before and after school programs are invaluable to working parents who have the peace of mind in knowing their little ones are being well cared for, bussed to school and back to the Children’s Center and even helped with homework.
