For her Girl Scout Gold award-winning project, a Deer Park High School student spearheaded the construction of a memorial bench and garden in honor of those with district ties who have died.

“The meaning behind this project is to create a positive space to carry on their legacy,” Emily Franciscovich, who created the memorial, said in a press release from the school district.

Suffolk County Legis. Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) presented the recent graduate with a county proclamation for her efforts.

“As a lifelong member of this community and a graduate of DPHS, this memorial bench and garden is particularly meaningful to me, as I’m sure it will be to so many who will come, take a seat and reflect on a cherished friend or loved one,” Donnelly said.

Franciscovich has been a girl scout for 13 years and became one of its few members to earn the gold award. In addition, she is the captain of the school’s tennis team and the founder of a volunteer group called “Girls That Give Back.”
