Drexel Avenue Elementary School in Westbury recently played host to a Women’s History Month program that resonated with cultural celebration and poetic introspection. The event, showcased the works of author and community member Adriana Devers, featured musical performances by talented individuals such as middle school student Jeremiah Rodriguez and Drexel Elementary educator Manny Ramirez.

The program, titled “Bearing in Mind, poems and vignettes by an Afro-Latina on on Long Island”, guided the audience on a journey of self-discovery and contemplation of societal challenges. Sponsored by Huntington Arts Council and the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) Artists grant program, the event shed light on the narratives and struggles of Long Island communities, delving into themes of identity, racism, and social disparities as explored through the lens of the author. It also aimed to honor and amplify the diverse heritage and voices of bicultural, bilingual, Afro-Latina individuals in celebration of Women’s History Month.

The impact of the evening lingered beyond the event, prompting attendees to reflect on personal and societal dynamics while recognizing the resilience and diversity of voices represented. Through a harmonious blend of artistic expressions and introspective moments, the program underscored the transformative power of storytelling and cultural exchange in forging connections and nurturing mutual understanding within communities.
