Community volunteers gathered on April 17 to spruce up Levittown in commemoration of Earth Day. The community-wide cleanup was a joint venture of the Levittown Community Council and the Town of Hempstead.
Town of Hempstead Sanitation Department workers at various locations collected about 100 bags of garbage during the four-hour event. Overcast skies and more-than-cool temperatures failed to discourage volunteers who arrived shovel and broom in hand to help with the beautification project.
Volunteers were dispersed throughout the community working in teams to clean up specific areas. Some brought what they collected back to the town parking lot on Hempstead Turnpike near OfficeMax. Many people had bags too numerous to cart back and left what they collected at the site they cleaned. The garbage was later collected by prearrangement with the town.
The Levittown Community Council is dedicated to maintaining pride and unity in the community defined by the Levittown and Island Trees school districts. Since its inception in 1998, it has randomly conducted community clean up efforts and for the past three years has combined resources with the Town of Hempstead in sponsoring the Earth Day cleanup campaign. Community Council Past President Gary Fisch chaired the event.
Among the participants at the event were Levittown Kiwanis Key Club members, Levitttown Fire Department volunteers, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of Nassau County and Levittown Community Council members and their families and friends.
Council President Mauro Cassano thanked all of the volunteers who showed up, the Town of Hempstead for announcing the event through a general mailing to the community and the Levittown School District Board of Education and Maintenance Department for their assistance in lending rakes and picks to help with the cleanup.
