From the Desk of Dr. Charles Murphy, Island Trees Superintendent of Schools: September 3, 2010

Welcome Back Parents! The Island Trees School District is not only delighted to have the children back to school starting Tuesday, September 7th, but wishes to welcome all of our parents to our annual “Meet the Teacher” nights. The schedules are as follows:

Tuesday, Sept. 14, 7 p.m. at Stokes Elementary School

Wednesday, Sept.15, 7 p.m. at Sparke Elementary School

Tuesday, Sept. 21, 7 p.m. at Island Trees Memorial Middle School

Thursday, Sept. 23, 7 p.m. at Island Trees High School

Not surprisingly, educational studies have shown that children experience far more success when parents are involved in their schools. Here in Island Trees, we encourage close parent-school involvement. Indeed, we believe our strong school and community relationships produce higher student achievement and facilitate a more conducive learning environment for children. As the school year begins, I encourage parents to use this new school year as an opportunity to get involved in our schools. Understandably, there are parents who just have too much on their plate to become personally involved in our schools. For those parents, please read all of our school literature, browse our website, and make sure you ask your children questions about their school day and their school work. Of course, if you have any concerns with your child’s education, please write or call your child’s teacher immediately. The Island Trees teachers appreciate knowing parents are interested in their students’ progress. Again, open lines of communication support the success of your children.

In closing, our mission of “Excellence and Success for all Children” is a collaborative effort. We need to work together for our children and do what we can to make this goal a reality. I am proud and honored to be working in such a supportive school community.
