In August of 1998 Miss Pullen’s kindergarten class, at Levittown’s Summit Lane School, came together and buried a time capsule in the backyard of their class mother Sue Kinder. Levittown was celebrating its 50th anniversary with many special events. The students celebrated the anniversary by each placing an envelope with a letter and their kindergarten picture, in a time capsule. They filled out information in the letter, such as their best friend, favorite actor, favorite TV show, movie, book, song, food, tape, sport, singing group and other information. They also brought novelty items of 1998, such as a Tomagotchi and a rooster Beanie Baby. Kinder included a copy of the August 14, 1998 edition of the Levittown Tribune, August 7, 1998 edition of Newsday, two editions of TV Guide, and Teen People magazine, a copy of the Levittown School News newsletter, and the class photo in the capsule. The kids took turns digging the hole, and then covering it with dirt, after the ‘time capsule’ was placed in it.
Fast forward 12 years, the kindergarten class, now the 2010 graduating class at Division Avenue High School, was invited back to retrieve the ‘time capsule.’ Many of the original kindergarteners were invited to attend the unearthing, but unfortunately, many had moved from Levittown or were unavailable. The students who could be contacted enjoyed a fun afternoon reading their ‘kindergarten’ letters and catching up with their classmates.
