Senior guard Kevin Monahan scored a game-high 14 points, but the MacArthur boys’ basketball team dropped its season opener to Manhasset, 55-38, in Long Beach High School’s annual “Battle of the Classes” Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 11.
After the Generals fell in an 8-0 hole, Monahan scored the first six points of the season for MacArthur. And when junior forward Kevin Roach then hit a jumper with 3:03 remaining in the first quarter, the Generals had pulled even.
Roach finished with 12 points. Junior guard William Cheshire and junior forward Dan Svenelid had four points apiece. Sophomore guard Gerard Cunningham and senior center Zack Wyckoff each had two points.
Monahan was named most outstanding player for the Generals and received a plaque from Long Beach coach T.J. Burke, whose team hosted the tournament.
MacArthur opens its conference schedule at Hicksville High School on Friday, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m.
The Generals then host the Jeff Shaw Memorial Basketball Tournament, with an opening-round match up against Division on Wednesday, Dec. 22 at 7:15 p.m. The tournament’s opening game pits Island Trees and Plainedge at MacArthur at 5:30 p.m. that day.
