The 3rd Annual Sarah Grace Weippert Memorial Blood Drive will take place at the William P. Prom Boutique Collections
Nassau Community College is hosting the “Prom Boutique,” a program in which individuals and businesses donate new or gently used prom and bridesmaid dresses for distribution to deserving young women. The LI Volunteer Center co-sponsors the Prom Boutique with the college. The program is a college-wide initiative that provides students real world experience in the areas of retailing, visual merchandising, fashion buying, event planning, and marketing and public relations. The event also teaches students the importance of social responsibility in marketing. Students, faculty and staff from all areas of the college come to help setup and run the boutique. All donations will be distributed to invited guests only at the Prom Boutique at Nassau Community College on April 9 and 10. All donations are tax deductible. Call 572-7587. Mill Neck Hosts ‘Save Our School Petition Rally’
A child who is deaf, blind or physically challenged did not cause the state’s financial deficit, yet in his 2011-12 budget proposal, Governor Cuomo has eliminated 4201 School funding for children with such disabilities. This puts Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf students in jeopardy as well as those attending 10 other 4201 Schools across New York State. Mill Neck Manor thanks the State Assembly and Senate for approving the restoration of 4201 funding, and now we have to convince the Governor to the same. You can help encourage the Governor to restore this essential funding by signing a “Deaf Children Deserve Better” petition at Mill Neck Manor’s Save Our School Petition Rally, to be held at Broadway Mall in Hicksville from 11 a.m. to closing on March 26 in the center court. Enter the mall from the south side in between Macy’s and Target, and look for the entrance near Tax Tips and the Karate School. Only New York State residents may sign the petition. Central Nassau Guidance & Counseling Services

•The Community Program has a group for senior citizens. The Golden Years? The group is open to all people over 60 who are dealing with issues related to drugs or alcohol. This is an opportunity to talk confidentially with your peers as well as having the support and guidance of a skilled professional. Medicare and most other insurances are accepted. •A support group for those who have family members with mental illness meets Mondays from 7 to 8 p.m. The fee is $5 per family. Therapeutic and supportive services to people hampered in their functioning by mental illness, psychological difficulties and/or substance abuse and addiction problems is provided. Among its services, the agency provides outpatient mental health services for children and adults living in Nassau County. The staff is comprised of psychiatrists, registered nurses and certified social workers. Call 822-6111.
•An outpatient substance abuse agency offering a Parenting Group on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. This group specializes in parenting issues for substance abusers as well as parents whose children use drugs. While drug use among teens has declined in other parts of the country, it continues to rise here in Nassau County. For information on this group as well as other services, call 822-4060. •Women’s Domestic Issues group provides support and education to women experiencing domestic conflict, child abuse, substance abuse and related issues. The focus will be on education, support as well as empowerment and proactive behavior. Issues related to the family and the legal system will be addressed. •Volunteers are needed by Central Nassau Guidance & Counseling Services to help staff the Pretty New Thrift Shop, 238 Main St., Farmingdale. HUMC Food Pantry Open
Hunger is a real issue facing our local area. In response to this need, the Hicksville United Methodist Church, 130 Old Country Rd., opened a food pantry. The pantry is open on Fridays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Non-perishable foods, paper goods and hygiene items are given to our neighbors in need. Contact us if you can help in any way. Hope for Youth
Hope for Youth is a not-for-profit agency located in Amityville and serving LI families and youth since 1969. Job Referral Service
Attention managers, store owners, private businesses: YES Community Center has a job referral service that helps businesses fill their job vacancies with pre-screened, motivate young people. The employment program consists of approximately 150 youth every year in their efforts to secure employment within the community. All participants go through an initial screening process to determine their employability and job readiness. They are offered information and assistance with any job-related issue such as job search skills, interview preparation and resume writing, career guidance and planning. YES provides a listing of current job openings within the area and helps match the needs of the employer with those of the young people. Walls of Honor
Need a gift for your favorite veteran? The NC Veterans Memorial Fund Inc., a nonprofit organization (not affiliated with Nassau County or any government agency) offers all veterans throughout the US a place on the “Walls of Honor.” These walls are located at Veterans Plaza, Eisenhower Park, East Meadow. It is for those living and deceased who served our county during war and peacetime. Space is available for those interested in including their name or that of a loved one. Proof of military service and a contribution of $100 per name is required. A 50 word or less military biography on each person on the wall will be housed in the veterans tower if requested. The LI Writer’s Guild is a friendly, Nassau County-based organization of amateur/professional, published/unpublished poets, essayists, novelists and short story writers who meet at informal workshops at the Levittown and Bethpage Libraries. Everything from plot development to characterization to basic literary theory for the fiction and nonfiction writer alike is discussed and practiced.
