Free Rabies Vaccine Clinic
Last Hope Animal Rescue (www.lasthope animalrescue.org) will be hosting a free rabies vaccine clinic for dogs and cats at the Last Hope Adoption Center, 3300 Beltagh Ave., Wantagh, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.. All Long Island pet owners are eligible; no appointment necessary, but all pets must be at least four months old. Dogs must be leashed and cats need to be in carriers. In addition, Last Hope is offering canine and feline distemper combination shots at the discounted price of $12 per vaccine. This clinic is made possible because of grant assistance from Pet Peeves, Inc. – the voice of Long Island Pets. LI VisionWalk
The 5th Annual Long Island VisionWalk will be held at Jones Beach State Park, 1 Ocean Pky., Wantagh. Registration: 9 a.m.; Walk starts: 10 a.m. Join hundreds in the fight against blindness at VisionWalk, the national signature fundraising event of the Foundation Fighting Blindness. Since its inception in the spring of 2006, the program has raised over $18 million to fund sight-saving research for retinal diseases including retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, Usher syndrome, and others. People are invited to form teams or walk independently at the free, family-friendly event, which will include activities for children, refreshments, a disc jockey, and more. Food Drive
The Center for the Alignment of Body, Mind and Spirit be sponsoring a food drive for the Harry Chapin Food Bank from Oct. 24 through Oct. 29. Come one, come all! Thanksgiving comes early to Wantagh. On Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m., the Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church, 1845 Wantagh Ave., Wantagh, will be hosting its famous Harvest Dinner – turkey with all the trimmings, lots of desserts, too. Reservations are required. Cost is $13 per adult and $9 per child. Children under 5 years old are free. Something new this year – orders to go are available. They must be pre-ordered by Nov. 2 and will be available for pick-up between 7 and 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 5. The dinner will be held in the Parish Hall (the white building next to the church). Long Island Fall Prairie Walk
Ever see a prairie? You do not have to go west. The Friends of Hempstead Plains at Nassau Community College is conducting walks on the 19-acre remnant LI prairie, once 60,000 acres. With few trees it was a habitat of the sun with 250 species of flowers and grasses – many at their tallest and most colorful in the fall. Walks are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Fridays, Sept. Oct. 21 and 28; Nov. 4. Nassau Community College Professor of biology Betsy Gulotta, Conservation Project manager, leads people on a path as she points to goldenrods, butterfly weed and blue curls, and identifies the interesting (as their names suggest) grasses: big bluestem and little bluestem, prairie beard grass, Indian grass and switchgrass, all populating the western prairies. Directions: take Meadowbrook Pky. to Exit M4, follow signs to Coliseum, Museum Row and Charles Lindbergh Blvd. Once on Charles Lindbergh Blvd., turn right into East Parking Area for Nassau Community College. See Hempstead Plains entrance at first intersection.

Levittown Pumpkin Patch
Levittown’s Pumpkin Patch is now open with a beautiful crop of dark orange pumpkins from the Navajo Indians in New Mexico. The Pumpkin Patch is always free admission, offering music, stickers, fun inflatables, and costume characters for the children. There is food available, roasted sweet corn, hay bales, corn stalks, and beautiful Long Island grown flowers at discount prices. Again, this year we offer an additional backyard adventure: a pay-one-price of only $3.75 per person 3 and older: A fun corn maze, inflatables and animals. This is located on the back area and is optional. Affordable fun is only minutes away from you. Pumpkin Patch
The Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church, 1845 Wantagh Ave., Wantagh, will be holding its annual Pumpkin Patch. There will be gourds and corn stalks available. Port North 7th Grade Super League Basketball
Port North is a 3 year old independent basketball team based out of Port Washington that plays year round in the super league at Island Garden and various tournaments in the metropolitan area. While the team has enjoyed success winning championships in 7th and 8th grade divisions this past season the emphasis is on teaching the fundamentals, developing good practice habits and preparing players for middle and high school basketball. The team has a professional trainer with over 20 years experience. We are currently looking for experienced players for next season. We have spots on teams for boys in the 7th grade next September. Levittown Historical Society and Museum
The organization collects, preserves and educates history of Levittown. Holds seven yearly general meetings in the Community Room of the Levittown Library and maintains the museum located in the Levittown Memorial Education Center, Room 10, 150 Abbey Ln., Levittown. The museum contains history of Levittown, WWII memorabilia, artifacts from the Levitt houses, toys, furniture, clothing of the ‘40s and ‘50s, replicas of the Levitt kitchen and the Levitt ranch living room.
