Red Cross can use more volunteers
With the peak of hurricane season approaching, American Red Cross volunteers, such as Pete Weiler of Levittown, are helping ensure the organization is ready to deal with potential hurricane evacuations before they occur.
Recently, Weiler joined a group of volunteers at a Port Washington firehouse to scrub down 346 cots that will be pre-positioned at the 50 largest Red Cross shelters located throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties.
“It may seem minor, but like all preparedness work, it’s critical,” said John Miller, Long Island Red Cross CEO. “We thank our volunteers for their help. Should we need to open a hurricane shelter this season, we’ll be ready.”
Weiler, a retired UPS driver who has lived in Levittown for 40 years, says he joined the Red Cross because he likes to help people.
“I like being a Red Cross volunteer because we all work together in times of need with the same goals in mind,” he says.
