In an effort to provide African American and Hispanic men an opportunity to have an open and honest discussion about fatherhood, Westbury’s Sigma Beta Beta chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., will host its annual “Take a Father to Breakfast,” program at Turtle Hook Middle School, 975 Jerusalem Ave., in Uniondale. The free event will be held Saturday, June 14, from 8 a.m. to noon.
“The idea is to get men in a room and have a frank discussion about being a father,” said Jerry Mackey, chapter president. “There will be men in the room who can help another father find a solution to a problem he might not feel comfortable asking someone he knows.”
The idea of the fatherhood breakfast was developed by the late Doran Thomas, a member of the chapter who died this past year. His idea was for fathers to come together and discuss their issues and concerns. It was his hope the fathers would provide more inspiration and encouragement to their children to be better students and citizens.
“Brother Thomas felt strongly that men in our community need to be leaders,” Mackey said. “But there are times when they need real talk, an opportunity to discuss their fears and concerns among men who understand where they are coming from, are willing to offer solutions and most of all, will not judge them.”
The guest speaker for event will be Bro. Thabiti Boone who has been recognized as a White House Champion of Change. He is also the international representative for the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and fatherhood adviser to the Allan Houston Foundation. A number of elected officials, ministers and community leaders have been invited to attend. This free event is for fathers only and reservations are not required.
