Westbury’s John Power will once again be participating in the Walk to Defeat ALS at Eisenhower Park on Sept. 20. He will be heading up Team Power in honor of his wife, Joan, who passed away last year from ALS.
ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. People with ALS lose their ability to initiate and control muscle movement, which leads to total paralysis and death within 2 to 5 years.
Power is still active with the ALS Association and their support group. In addition to research, funds also go to the association to ease the lives and care for those stricken. The Powers both have benefited immeasurably from the ALS association by their loan closet and support groups.
The walk is a great family event, which features food, entertainment and more. Visit http://webgny.alsa.org/goto/johnpower2014 to join Team Power or make a donation.
In addition to the walk, Power will be holding a Zumba-athon on Sunday, Oct. 5 at the Phipps Sports Center at 346 Post Ave from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Certified Zumba instructors will keep Zumba enthusiasts and beginners moving and grooving. $15 each. For more information contact John at 516-333-8489.
