Pet Adoptions: How To Welcome A New Furry Friend

As many pet owners know, adopting a new cat or dog can be exciting and rewarding, but adding another can be stressful.

Nora Bevilacqua, manager of behavior and training at Bideawee, says that verbal and physical feedback are important during introductions.

“The human voice is a great asset when it comes to animals. It can help break up tension that is arising and reward any good behavior that is occurring,” she says. “If the dogs or cats are behaving appropriately, reward them with a ‘Yay, good boy/girl’ and soft petting. If the tension is rising, you can break that up with a simple ‘Hey, knock that off’ and separate them briefly.

“It’s very important never to yell at your pets,” she adds. “Aggression plus aggression could create more aggression.”

If you’re thinking about bringing home a new friend and already have a furry family member, here are some tips to make the merger easier.

THINK ABOUT DYNAMICS

Has your pet been around another animal? For adopted kittens and puppies, oftentimes the answer is no. Not taking this into account can lead to animal depression, acting out, running away, and sometimes, illness. Most shelters/rescuers prefer, and often require, a meet-and-greet between your current pet and potential new one.

TAKE IT SLOW

Some experts suggest letting cats sniff each other through closed doors for a week before allowing them to meet. After that, monitor behavior when they’re together, adjusting play/inclusion time accordingly. For dogs, allow ample time for the new pooch to sniff and roam your house while the current dog is away, and vice versa. If they seem calm, let them meet in a park with their leashes on. If it goes well, let the dogs sniff each other. Walk them home with your existing dog leading the way; let your existing dog enter the house first to invite the new dog in.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY

What one pet gets, the other should too. Don’t let pets share treats or food to avoid fighting. Dogs should be fed at the same time and have the same opportunities, such as sleeping locations, toys, walks, etc. Cats should each have their own litter boxes. And don’t forget about giving equal attention. Favoring a new pet will distress the current pet.

KEEP CALM

Furry friendships do not develop immediately. Before adopting a pet, remember that it takes time for animals to become friends, and in some cases, it may never happen. It’s best to stay calm, expect challenges, and not get discouraged if things aren’t peachy right away. With patience and commitment, families will thrive.

Bowie, Cary Grant Among Dogs, Cats Up For Adoption on Long Island

There is never a shortage of adorable animals available at our local shelters and rescues, but if you can’t adopt and would like to help animals in need, the next best thing is volunteering, fostering, or donating to the wonderful organizations that help our Long Island animals.

The Nassau Country Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NCSPCA) is in great need of microchip scanners, which help humane officers identify a pet’s owner, keep track of the number of animals an owner has and if an owner has acquired any new pets. Every little bit counts, so if you can help, please check out their amazon wish list or visit nassaucountyspca.org for more info.

Cary Grant

Available for adoption at North Shore Animal League America:

His name says it all. Cary Grant, named for the late British actor, is a shy but sweet, friendly, affectionate, loyal, and curious, dachshund-mix and might just be the perfect blend of mellow yet playful. He’s quite the character when he turns on the charm. Cary is fully housebroken and walks well on a leash but does have a few special needs so would adapt best to a calm, quiet home where he can relax without any other small pets or young children. Potential adopters must have prior dog ownership experience.

Hercules

Hercules and Vesty were adopted together in 2014, but recently returned when their owners could no longer care for them. They are a lovable bonded pair looking for the perfect adopters to open their heart and their home. They are staff favorites who greet everyone that enters our kennel managers’ offices. Sweet and friendly, they need to find a home together. They would do best in a home with children 10 years and up, and responsible pet parents with dog experience.

Vesty

Please contact Sonias@animalleague.org for more information about adopting Cary Grant, Hercules and Vesty today!

Bernie

Available for adoption at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter:

Bernie is quite the handsome 9-year-old Jack Russell Terrier who is pretty awesome, since he’s housebroken, crate trained and knows a bunch of commands like, Sit, Down, Stay, Come, Get Toy and Leave It! He’s a pretty smart fella, so sky’s the limit with what this little guy is capable of. Bernie would be happiest in an adult only home only. He’s shown interest in some other dogs as well.

Roberto

Roberto ain’t nothing but a Hound dog! He loves the sights and sounds when outside on a walk and is social and sweet with new people and even other dogs! Roberto would do best in a home with tween and up. It’s highly recommended to run, not walk down to the shelter to meet this little dude in-person to really see how amazing he is!

Nicholas

Available for adoption at Bideawee:

This gorgeous and happy-go-lucky 8-year-old is named Nicholas. Isn’t he just a sight to behold? Donning a fantastic coat, two-tone eyes, and a comical grin, it’s hard not to be enchanted by him!

Being an incredibly jubilant and free-spirited dog, he is seeking an equally active, adventurous, and dog-savvy home to call his own. Nicholas needs a world full of enrichment, exercise, exploration, and endless learning, and so a home with older children is best for him. In return, you can expect a lifetime of laughs, love, and loyalty from this handsome guy!

He has endless affection to shower upon the right family. During the month of August, Nicholas’ adoption fee will be waived. For more information, check out his webpage.

Luke

Luke here is a 3-year-old large mixed-breed who came to Bideawee in late September 2017 from Alabama. Luke has that classic mixed-breed look with a soft fur coat, white patches on his chest and nose and a full and fluffy tail. However, Luke has a special characteristic that sets him apart from his canine companions – Luke only has three legs!

But this difference doesn’t slow him down at all. He’s still active and enjoys his walks outside. In fact, being outside is one of his favorite activities. He loves the fresh air and he’ll start to really relax after a long walk or an energetic game of fetch.

Luke is very sweet with people and enjoys snuggling, cuddling and all the better doggy-human pastimes. Luke is also friendly with strangers and will happily say “hi” when they inevitably ask if they can pet him. Luke is pickier about his doggy friends though, so he should go home without another pet.

Because Luke is so exuberant when he likes someone, we recommend him going home without young children. This handsome guy is 44 pounds and full grown. During August, Luke’s adoption fee will be waived. Check out Luke’s webpage.

Jungle

Jungle is an entertaining adult kitty of 3 years who weighs 13 pounds. This adorable tuxedo feline is very people-oriented and loves to play! However, he is very active and enthusiastic, to the point where he can get a little carried away at times, playing too roughly.

Therefore, he is being recommended for a gentle and experienced family. This cutie might be able to live with another active kitty, but this should be considered on a case-by-case basis. His new household would need to provide a lot of space for Jungle as well as plenty of healthy outlets for his energy and curiosity. Check out Jungle’s webpage.

Beanie

Beanie is a sweet and elegant young lady who is enchanting to behold! Donning a gorgeous obsidian coat, and brilliant chartreuse eyes, Beanie is gorgeous from head to tail. Filled with a love for people and an appreciation for life, Beanie’s heart is just spilling over.

All this precious girl needs is an equally wonderful family to call her own. She has been looking for her forever family since September 2016. If Beanie sounds like the one for you, then please ask about adopting her today! For more info, check out her webpage.
